Alibaug is a city that is like a city within a city, exclusively for the wealthy members of society. It is located 19 km from Mumbai and is known for its extravagance, luxury, and hidden secrets. The affluent people of Mumbai own lavish farmhouses and villas in Alibaug and often take short vacations there to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. 'Karmma Calling' is a story about a wealthy businesswoman, Indrani Kothari (played by Raveena Tandon), and the secrets that surround her opulent Kothari farmhouse in Alibaug, which are just as big as the pillars of her mansion.
Raveena Tandon, also known as Indrani Kothari, is one of the wealthiest individuals in Alibaug. She's known for hosting amazing parties and is feared in her society. She's a graceful person who can accomplish the impossible, but she has a past that she can't escape. Enter Karmma Talwar, the newest wealthy, not-so-friendly neighbor in Alibaug, who raises suspicion just by being there. However, secrets begin to unravel when Karma appears with vengeance on her mind. The reason behind her actions is revealed through seven high-on-adrenaline episodes.
It might not kick off like a show that "Karmma Calling" does; instead, it is more akin to a slow-cooked broth. It will take you at least fifteen minutes to understand what is going on. During this time, you might want to give up but do not give up just yet. Hang in there, and before you know it, you will have reached the fourth episode! Although it might start slowly, it is well worth the wait.
Trailer
The plot of the show is unique and doesn't follow the typical storyline of a revenge drama. However, the casting is what makes it stand out. Although Raveena Tandon isn't the main character, she is the star of the show and delivers a remarkable performance. It's worth noting that she portrays a morally ambiguous character and does justice to it.
The movie "Karma Calling" features Raveena and Namrata Sheth as opposite characters, with Karma personified as the main theme. Namrata's character is difficult for Raveena to share screen time with because of her character's shady motivations from the beginning. Nevertheless, Namrata holds her own and gives an amazing performance.
Varun Sood plays the role of Ayaan in the series. We think he could have done a better job with the character, but his real friendship with Karmma is convincing, so that is half the work done. Waluscha De Sousa plays a significant role in the series. Her portrayal of a villain is excellent. It is impressive when a show's antagonist makes you dislike the character, and Waluscha has done a great job of that.
It must have been difficult for the creators of "Karmma Calling" to decide on a tone that can not be shimmery or full; therefore, they cleverly kept the contrast sharp, which helped to establish the overall atmosphere of the revenge drama. The show is about one's exuberance and the realization that not everything that glitters is gold.
While the series progresses slowly, you will not get bored with it quickly because each episode deftly ends on a cliffhanger, leaving you eager to press "skip credits" to see the next installment. While most revenge dramas overly emphasize vengeance, "Karmma Calling" adopts a more nuanced approach, using mise en scene to justify whys and hows without forcing you to pay close attention to every detail. This is what makes the show stand out.
What the program lacks is character development in certain scenes. We can understand the necessity for some abrupt cuts, but it still left the impression that something was left unfinished. For example, there is an accident reference on the show that features Ayaan. A year later, he turns around and acts morally, thanks to Karmma. However, the scene lacked enough depth to establish Ayaan's character.
The show "Karmma Calling" heavily relies on references. For example, one of the show's highlights is when the Kotharis call a helicopter to break their fast in the sky because the moon is hidden by clouds far past its uptime. "Guilty" director Ruchi Narain adapted the show from the American series "Revenge," and she did a respectable job with the approach.
"Karma Calling" should be on your list if you enjoy thrillers and frequently find yourself lamenting the lack of good shows in the genre to watch.
