Who was Sam Bahadur?


Field Marshal Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw was the Chief of the Army Staff of the Indian Army during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. He was the first Indian Army officer to be promoted to field marshal. His military career spanned over four decades, including service in five wars, starting with World War II. After the Indian Army gained independence in 1947, soldiers of the 8th Gorkha Rifles gave him the nickname "Bahadur". He went on to lead the force to a historic victory in the 1971 Indo-Pak war while serving as Army Chief.
